The A-Z of Film…PART ONE

123 is for 2001: A Space Odyssey

Kubrick’s most mysterious and misunderstood film. A film which spans the dawn of man itself. Monkeys, space-missions, an evil computer and the ambiguous ‘space-child’ make this film about man’s evolution (and a scientific definition of God)  more head-scratchingly deep than any other so-called ‘deep film’. So deep in fact that Arthur C Clarke claimed that if you fully understood what 2001 means ” we failed”.

A is for Airplane!

More random than an acid-addicts hallucinations, this one will definitely keep you laughing until you get stomach cramps. With funny gags, rude blow-up dolls and some hilarious deadpan delivery, Airplane! adds up to one of the best comedies ever made.

B is for Borat

Homophobic, racist, sexist, and antisemetic – Borat is the most controversial comedy film ever made. Controversial during filming (Sacha Baron Cohen was arrested…several times) and on release (The Daily Mail went crazy), this adds up to a comedy film which provides shock after shock rather than laugh after laugh. I didn’t like it that much, but I can certainly say: I was not bored for one minute.

C is for The Color Purple

Steven Spielberg’s gut-wrenching and heart-warming tale about love, friendship, forgiveness and hope is a film-fan’s must see. Celie is a young black girl who faces prejudices because of her skin colour and because of her sex.  Not only that, but she has her kids taken away from her, is separated from her beloved sister ‘Nettie’ and was repeatedly raped by her father, and is forced into a marriage filled with no love. However, with the help of Shug Avery and her friends, Celie gets through the struggles of life. Uplifting, powerful and a definite tear-jerker, The Color Purple is one to watch.

D is for The Deer Hunter

A group of Steel Workers head off to the Vietnam War; once in Vietnam, they are forced to play russian roulette, they are all then left psychologically damaged. The Deer Hunter is a harsh, unforgiving and brutal tale, and is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Next time…E to I…
