O is for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) is sent to a mental hospital to be rehabilitated and to be assessed for any mental disorders. There he starts up a rebellion against the sadistic and manipulative Nurse Fletcher. A film any film-lover should see: great performances, solid direction and flares of comedy intertwined with moments of shock, horror and disturb.
P is for Pulp Fiction
God knows what order it’s in. Quentin Tarantino’s second and most popular movie, Pulp Fiction, smashes boundaries, narrative conventions and Marvin’s face. It’s a story about gangsters, dinner bandits, a suitcase, and a golden watch hidden somewhere you really don’t want to know – all mixed up together to form a looping, confusing, funny, thrilling, shocking, and sublime cinematic masterpiece.
Q is for The Queen
Biopic about the week every Brit who lived through September 1997 will never forget. Helen Mirren plays The Queen and Charlie Sheen plays Tony Blair. The Queen proves that the following formula works: great acting, great script, great direction. Simple.
R is for The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Cult classic. An alien transvestite from the planet ‘Transsexual’ and the universe of ‘Transsylvania’, doesn’t let newly married couple Janet and Brad leave his gothic mansion – mainly because he has to show him his hunkier, and definitely sexier version of Frankenstein, gets a bit busy turning people into stone, and randomly bursts into song whilst committing a violent act on Meatloaf (yes, Meatloaf). Funny, random, musical, lighthearted, and very very quotable, The Rocky Horror Picture Show will always entertain.
S is for Salo or The 120 Days of Sodom
Passolini’s darkly disturbing satire on fascism and human nature. Whether it actually is a satire has, and will always be debated. Either way it’s been ranked as one of the most shocking, brutal and disturbing movies ever made. 9 teenagers are taken in by a group of fascist libertines where they are subjected to 120 days of physical, psychological and sexual torture…and shit-eating. Makes The Human Centipede look like Bambi.
